Tilling feels productive because it visibly loosens compacted soil immediately. The problem is that it destroys the soil structure built by roots, fungi, and worms, which makes the ground compact again faster than before — often within a single season. The methods below fix compaction without that rebound.
Broadfork or garden fork aeration
A broadfork lets you loosen soil to a depth of 10–12 inches by lifting and cracking it rather than inverting and pulverizing it the way a tiller does. This preserves soil layers and existing structure while still relieving compaction.
Deep-rooted cover crops
Daikon radish and tillage radish are sometimes called "biological tillers" because their roots punch straight down through compacted layers, then rot in place over winter, leaving channels for water and air without any mechanical disturbance at all.
Consistent organic matter, applied on the surface
A yearly layer of compost or mulch, left to be incorporated by worms and rainfall rather than dug in, steadily improves soil structure over two to three seasons. This is slower than tilling but the results do not reverse the way tilled soil does.
The one case tilling is still reasonable
A one-time initial till when converting a lawn or heavily compacted construction site to a garden bed for the first time is a defensible exception — the goal afterward is to never till that same soil again.
