How to Test and Fix Your Soil pH Without a Lab

A real soil lab test is always more accurate than any home method, and worth doing once every few years for a serious vegetable garden. But if a plant is struggling right now and you need a fast read, these two kitchen-cabinet methods will tell you whether you are dealing with acidic or alkaline soil.

The vinegar and baking soda test

Take two soil samples. Add vinegar to the first — if it fizzes, your soil is alkaline. If nothing happens, add water to the second sample to make mud, then add baking soda; if that fizzes, your soil is acidic. Neither test gives you a precise number, but both reliably tell you which direction to correct.

A basic drugstore pH test kit

Inexpensive pH strips or a simple probe-and-solution kit will get you within roughly half a point of a lab result — accurate enough to guide amendment decisions for most home gardens, if not precise enough for commercial growing.

Fixing what you find

  • Soil testing acidic (below 6.0): add garden lime, worked in several months before planting since it acts slowly.
  • Soil testing alkaline (above 7.5): add elemental sulfur or plenty of acidic organic matter like pine needles or peat.
  • Most vegetables want a range of 6.0–7.0 — if your test lands inside that range, leave it alone rather than over-correcting.
